If you’re feeling overwhelmed by everything you need to know about skincare, don’t worry! You’ve started at the right place: finding your skin type.
Once you know your skin type, you can easily look for specific products that will effectively help your skin.
So here are the common characteristics of the main skin types, along with processes you can use to determine which skin type you have.
Skin Types
Oily Skin
Large pores
Shiny and greasy due to excess sebum (face oil)
More prone to breakouts
Dry Skin
Small pores
Feels rough, itchy, tight and dull
Different from dehydrated skin!
Normal skin
Well balanced: not too oily, but not too dry
Smooth skin
Little to no breakouts
Combination Skin
Combination of dry and oily skin
Tends to have an oily T-zone (forehead and nose) and dry cheeks
Sensitive Skin?
A common misconception is that sensitive skin is a category unto itself, such as the four types listed above. However, the truth is that you can have sensitive skin on top of your skin type; for example, you can have both oily and sensitive skin.
As the name suggests, sensitive skin is very sensitive: easily prone to redness, itchiness and breakouts. Sensitive skin can also often be easily irritated by fragrances or specific ingredients in some products.
Finding Your Skin Type
There are 2 processes that can be used to find your skin type.
30 Minutes Method
Wash your face with just water or a gentle cleanser.
Dry your face by patting it gently with a clean towel.
Do not use any other skincare products for the next 30 minutes.
Once the time is up, assess your skin and see which skin type it best falls under, seeing which characteristics it matches to above.
Example: If your skin is very tight and flaky, then you most likely have dry skin. If your T-zone is shiny, then you most likely have oily skin.
Blotting Sheets Method
Wash your face with just water or a gentle cleanser.
Dry your face by patting it gently with a clean towel.
Do not use any other skincare products for the next 30 minutes.
Press clean blotting sheets to different parts of your face, noticing which parts of your face make the blotting sheets more oily.
If the blotting sheets have not absorbed any oil, then your skin is dry. If the sheets have absorbed visible oil, then your skin is oily. If some sheets have absorbed oil and some have not, then you likely have combination skin.
Now What?
Now that you have your skin type, you can find the right products to use to help your skin glow!
It’s also important to note that skin type can also change over time, and is affected by factors such as age and hydration. So if you’re feeling a change in your skin after a while of using the same products, it might be time to test your skin type again.
