Despite having thick, “dream hair,” I battled aggressive alopecia—twice. It turns out, hair loss is rarely just about your scalp—it's your body’s way of asking for help. Here’s how I uncovered the root causes and built a healing protocol that actually worked.
I’ve always been proud of my long, thick, and naturally dense hair—what many would call “dream hair.” But beneath the surface, I was fighting a genetic battle. I inherited a predisposition to male pattern baldness from my father's side and female pattern baldness from my mother's, a dual challenge that made maintaining my hair's health a lifelong priority.
My personal journey with aggressive alopecia, which I've battled twice, taught me a vital truth: hair loss is rarely about one single thing. It’s usually your body’s way of asking for help, and it is entirely possible to reverse or manage it once you know what’s going on.
This guide, inspired by my own "Roots Reset & Growth Protocol," will help you understand the triggers behind hair loss and thinning at different stages of your life, from the teen years to menopause.
General Signs & Triggers
Hair loss and thinning can appear in many ways, depending on the cause. Signs and symptoms may include:
Gradual thinning on top of the head, often seen as a broadening of your hair part.
Circular or patchy bald spots on the scalp, beard, or eyebrows. Your skin may become itchy or painful before the hair falls out.
Sudden loosening of hair. A physical or emotional shock can cause hair to loosen. Handfuls of hair may come out when combing or washing your hair or even after gentle tugging.
These issues are typically related to one or more of the following factors: family history, hormonal changes, medical conditions, medications, a very stressful event, and even certain hairstyles or treatments.
Section 1: Teen Years: Hormones, Stress & Your Hair’s First Crisis

The teenage years are a time of rapid change, and your hormones are in a constant state of flux. This can directly impact your hair.
Hormonal Shifts = Disrupted Hair Cycle: As hormones fluctuate during puberty, they can disrupt the hair growth cycle. This can lead to increased shedding, an oily or greasy scalp, and even sudden hair loss.
Dieting & Nutrition: The pressure to "fit in" often leads to fad diets, which can cause nutrient deficiencies. Your hair needs a steady supply of protein, iron, and B-vitamins to grow. Cutting these out can signal to your body that it's in survival mode, pushing hair out of the growth phase.
Hairstyles & Treatments: Excessive hairstyling or hairstyles that pull your hair tight, such as pigtails or cornrows, can cause a type of hair loss called traction alopecia, which is common in this age group.
Section 2: Your 20s & 30s: Is Your Lifestyle Silently Sabotaging Your Hair?

This is a time of career building and intense lifestyles, which can take a heavy toll on your hair.
Chronic Stress & Sleep Deprivation: Chronic stress raises cortisol, the stress hormone, which pushes hair follicles out of the growth phase and into the shedding phase too early. A constantly "on" lifestyle and lack of sleep are major contributors to this. Hair doesn’t thrive in survival mode.
Weight Loss or Low-Carb Dieting: In our rush to “get healthy,” we often make drastic changes to our diet. Cutting calories or carbs too quickly tells your body that this is not a time to grow non-essential things like hair.
Medications and Supplements: Hair loss can be a side effect of certain drugs, such as those used for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, gout, and high blood pressure.
Nutrient Deficiencies: Blood loss during menstruation, combined with a fast-paced lifestyle, can drain your body's stores of key nutrients like Ferritin (Iron), Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, and Zinc. These are essential for strong, healthy hair and a balanced scalp.
Section 3: The Pregnancy & Postpartum Journey: What No One Tells You About the Hair You’ll Lose

The journey of new motherhood is one of the most common times for women to experience hair loss. It's a powerful combination of hormonal shifts and nutritional drain.
The Rise Before the Fall: During pregnancy, elevated estrogen levels keep your hair in the anagen (growth) phase for longer. Your ponytail feels fuller, and your hair looks its best. But after birth, your hormones take a sharp dip. This sudden drop triggers a mass shift of hair follicles into the shedding phase, a condition called telogen effluvium. This can feel scary, especially when you're already navigating the physical and emotional shifts of new motherhood, but it's a temporary "reset" for your hair.
Breastfeeding & Nutrient Drain: While breastfeeding, prolactin (the milk-producing hormone) stays high and suppresses estrogen levels. Low estrogen means more hair shedding. Breastfeeding also increases your body’s need for iron, B12, zinc, protein, and healthy fats. If you’re not replenishing these nutrients, your hair follicles can’t thrive, and hair loss can linger.
Section 4: The Menopausal Years (Perimenopause & Genetics): Why Your Hair is Thinning—and What You Can Do About It

For many women, the hormonal shifts of perimenopause and menopause can trigger or accelerate hair loss.
Estrogen Drops & Genetic Predisposition: When estrogen drops during perimenopause, it can unmask or accelerate a genetic predisposition to Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL). You might notice a widening part line or thinning at the crown.
The Role of DHT: A hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is a common culprit. When estrogen drops, DHT can start affecting hair follicles, shrinking them over time. We formulated our products with natural DHT blockers like Saw Palmetto, Pumpkin Seed oil, and Nettle Extract to help mitigate this effect.
The Solution: A Holistic "Roots Reset" Protocol

Tackling hair loss requires a holistic approach, which is why I created my "Roots Reset & Growth Protocol." It’s not just a product guide; it’s a complete system designed to empower you to take back control.
Part 1: Internal Wellness Support
Your internal care is the foundation for healthy hair regrowth.
Get Blood Tests: Deficiency of minerals, vitamins, and hormonal imbalance is a major cause of hair fall. Please get your blood tested to identify any underlying issues.
Manage Stress & Sleep: Chronic stress and lack of sleep raise cortisol, which negatively impacts hair health. Try box breathing, short power naps, or a "cup of tea alone" ritual to calm your nervous system.
Be Mindful of Your Diet & Water Intake: A balanced diet with appropriate water intake is crucial. Focus on getting enough protein, iron (with Vitamin C for absorption), and Omega-3s. A simple 5-glass infused water routine can be a game-changer for hydration.
Part 2: Scalp Health & Stimulation
Stimulating your scalp awakens dormant follicles and enhances nutrient delivery.
Scalp Massage: A regular scalp massage with our hair oil improves circulation and reduces follicle tension.
Consider a Water Softener: Hard water in many areas can be a big reason for hair fall. A water softener can help.
Avoid Hot Water: Always use lukewarm water for head washes, as hot water can strip the scalp and hair of natural oils.
Part 3: Natural & Targeted Haircare
My second aggressive episode of hair loss was the push I needed to create a complete, synergistic routine. My new shampoo and conditioner are the culmination of years of research, designed to work together with my original formulas to provide a holistic solution.
Our Products:
Shampoo: A gentle, sulfate-free cleanser infused with botanicals like Green Tea and Kalonji (Black Seed) to detoxify the scalp and prepare it for treatment.
Conditioner: A reparative formula that uses BTMS-50 and Hydrolyzed Rice Protein to mend, hydrate, and strengthen the hair shaft, reducing breakage.
Hair Oil Serum: Available in two options—Nourishing for normal and dry scalps, and Scalp Balancing for oily and combination scalps. Both are multipurpose and can be used as a pre-wash treatment or a styling serum.
Hair Mask: A deep conditioning treatment with Shea Butter, Sweet Almond Oil, and Coconut Oil for intense nourishment.
Hair Tonic: An overnight scalp prep solution enriched with Caffeine, Niacinamide, and Peppermint Essential Oil to stimulate follicles and regulate scalp health.
The Routine: A Step-by-Step Guide for All 5 Products
Here is a comprehensive routine that incorporates all five products for maximum results.
Step 1: The Night Before (with Hair Tonic): Use the tonic to prep your scalp and allow the active ingredients to work overnight. Use the pipette to apply a few drops directly to your scalp in sections and gently massage it in.
Step 2: Pre-Wash Treatment (with Hair Oil or Mask): The next morning, apply either your Hair Oil Serum or Hair Mask as a pre-wash treatment. Gently massage it into your scalp and work it through to the ends. Leave it on for 30-45 minutes to deeply nourish and dissolve buildup.
Step 3: Wash Day (with Shampoo & Conditioner): Rinse the oil or mask out with lukewarm water. Use a small amount of our Shampoo and massage it into your scalp. After rinsing, apply our Conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends, leaving it on for 3-5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
Step 4: Post-Wash Styling (with Hair Oil): Once your hair is towel-dried, take a few drops of the Hair Oil, rub it between your palms, and gently apply it to the lengths of your damp hair to lock in moisture and add shine and to tame flyaways, use another drop of oil as a finishing polish.
